Interoperable Master Format
The SMPTE Interoperable Master Format (IMF) is a file-based framework for the exchange and processing of multiple versions (such as airline edits, special edition, countries, or languages) of the same high-quality finished video work (such as feature, episode, trailer, or advertisement) destined for distribution channels worldwide. The IMF Framework and its Applications are specified in the SMPTE 2067[1] suite of documents. IMF is recognized as a solution to "versionitis" problem of creating large numbers (often over 500) of different version edits of video material[2].
A benefit of IMF is reduced storage and management costs, meaning there is less master data to move and store, which is important for the large files that get passed around during production and post production[3].
Eric King, VP of U.S. Mastering Operations, Deluxe Technicolor Digital Cinema, has said that the introductions of Ultra High-Def (UHD) and high dynamic range (HDR) distribution platforms represent a major force that’s helping to drive adoption and implementation of IMF[4].
IMF provides the specification to separate the content into various "ingredients" (assets), a number of "recipes" (Composition Play Lists, or CPLs) and a selection of instructions (or Output Program Lists, or OPLs) appropriate for each of those audiences.
The CPL is created for each version of the media that is required. The OPL is be specific to the technical specifications of the recipients of the final output file.
The IMF Master Package (IMP) is package consisting of a packing list and all its assets. Most assets will be MXF files. The packing list is an XML Manifest of all of the elements in a package [5]
Specialization of the IMF Framework designed to meet the requirements of specific domains is achieved through the definition of IMF Applications.
IMF is one of two mechanisms to deliver media assets to Netflix [6]. The open source Photon is a Java implementation of the Interoperable Master Format (IMF) standard. An IMF Analyzer is available from the The Institut fuer Rundfunktechnik (IRT)[7].
The North American Broadcasting Association (NABA) and the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) have developed an IMF library master specification for JPEG 2000 content [8].
The Hollywood Professional Assocation (HPA) has established an IMF User Group to brings together content owners, service providers, retailers and equipment/software vendors to enhance and promote the use of IMF globally, across domains of applications[9]. IMF User Group members include Amazon, Apple, AT&T, Apple, Comcast, Deluxe, Disney, Dolby, HBO, Paramount, PBS, and Warner Bros [10]
