"Life of Brian" Friday
"Life of Brian" Friday is a yearly celebration mostly observed by atheists, agnostics and fans of the comedy group "Monty Python". Created in 1990 by atheist Clayton Forno, to coincide with Good Friday, so that non-religious people could have a celebration of their own. Forno was tired of seeing Christian celebrations that were hijacked from Pagan holidays being so ubiquitous, but there being no holidays for atheists. Being a fan of the "Monty Python" movie "Life of Brian" and of its message to think for yourself and not let religious leaders tell you what to do and how to live…and to "always look on the bright side of life", he decided to base his holiday on it. For many years he was the only person celebrating this new holiday, until joining the internet in 2000 and becoming a member of several atheist newsgroups. While slow to spread, more and more people joined in celebrations every year and now with the help of Facebook, the word is spreading.
While one of the messages of the day is "don't let anyone tell you what to do" there are no hard and fast rules about how to celebrate, but there are traditions and traditions are important. The prescribed ways to celebrate LOBF are;
- Gather family and friends together to watch "Monty Python's Life of Brian" and laugh yourself silly. Any suitably satirical or anti-establishment, anti-religious dogma comedy will do as a replacement…but traditionally it should be "Brian".
- Cook your favorite food and gather your favorite drink of choice and eat and drink yourself silly. Indulge in what feels good and it will do you good.
- Get your favorite chocolate and eat as much as you like. Forget your diet, it's a day to feel good.
- Get together with your partner or friend or left hand or right hand and have as much sex as you can possibly have…the more orgasms the better.
- Go to sleep with a content, satisfied feeling and dream sweet dreams.
Forno felt that feeling good all day was much better than being forced to go to church and being told that you are going to hell.
