&Audition – The Howling – is an audition reality program that is currently airing and organized by HYBE Labels Japan in which a global boy group will make its debut. Having premiered on July 9 2022, the program will be broadcast on Saturday at 1:30PM JST via the online video streaming service Hulu in Japan and worldwide simultaneously via the HYBE Labels official YouTube channel. This will be a 60-minute, uncut version of the program while a shorter 30-minute program will air in Japan on terrestrial television via Nippon TV every Thursday at 12:59 AM JST beginning July 14, 2022.[1][2]
The program will unveil the diverse performances of artists and their story of growth.
Background[edit]
On January 1, 2021, it was announced that Big Hit Japan will launch the "Big Hit Japan Global Debut Project", to produce artists who will be make their start in Japan and be active worldwide. Former I-LAND contestants K, Nicholas, EJ and Taki were to take part and additional members would join after auditions called "&AUDITION".[3]
On March 19, 2021, Big Hit Entertainment re-branded and re-structured into HYBE,[4] with the introduction of HYBE Labels Japan who was now in charge of the group's debut.[5]
On November 4, 2021, HYBE Japan shared their Global Debut Project of a boy group that includes four former "I-LAND" contestants: K, Nicholas, EJ, and Taki with the selection of additional members to join them through the audition program "&Audition", will be aired in 2022.[6]. On the same day, an official Twitter account for the four members (under the name "&AUDITION Boys") was launched[7]
On January 18, 2022, Hybe Labels Japan announced that an official YouTube channel was opened called &AUDITION boys,[8] a video of the 'Special Film' that appeared was uploaded along with various other content like vlogs until the end of April 2022.
On March 9 2022, it was announced that HYBE Labels Japan will broadcast the audition program &AUDITION - The Howling starting in July 2022, the program being the first phase of the HYBE LABELS JAPAN Global Debut Project.[9]
On May 30, 2022, an official website and social media sites for the program and details of broadcast dates were opened.[10]
On June 4, 2022, profile photos of the 15 trainees were revealed where each stands in a background of a fantasy world where a duality of softness and strength is expressed.[11][12]
On June 28 2022, the signal song and music video for &AUDITION, "The Final Countdown" was released.[13]

There are a total of 15 trainees participating on the show. Four are the debut members: K, Nicholas, EJ and Taki were previously contestants from the South Korean boy group survival reality show I-Land. They will be joined by 11 other trainees on the show.[14]

&AUDITION - The Howling is first introduced by Bang Shi-hyuk as a project where debut trainees K, Nicholas, EJ and Taki will be joined by newly selected members through the program to debut as HYBE LABELS JAPAN's first boy group. The show begins with K, Nicholas, EJ and Taki meeting Enhypen and then going to meet the other 11 trainees for the first time. The trainees are presented with their first task, the "Signal Song Mission" where they are to perform the song The Final Countdown and be evaluated by producers. The trials and hardships they face while practising hard to go up on stage for the first time as a group are revealed. |
