[&], read as and, is the upcoming fourth extended play by South Korean girl group Loona. It is scheduled to be released on June 28, 2021, by Blockberry Creative.[1][2]

Background

On June 1, midnight KST, Loona announced through social media that they will be releasing a new mini-album titled '[&]' on June 28. They also shared a cryptic teaser image containing the Latin words "citius, altius, fortius. Acta est fabula, plaudite" which translate to "Faster, higher, stronger. The play is over, applaud".[3][4] The following day a teaser image titled 'XII' was released featuring twelve eyes, confirming the return of member Haseul who did not take part in the group's last two promotional cycles to focus on her mental health.[5]Individual member teaser pictures were released from June 3 to June 6 and a highlight medley video for the album was released on the group's YouTube channel on June 6.

The album track list for the album was revelation on June 10 and "PTT (Paint the Town)" was announced as the title track. Four different concept photos were also released for the album.[6] The first teaser for the album was released on June 23 and it features member Kim Lip walking into the huge temple, and overlapped with the scene for the video for her solo song "Eclipse". Then, a drum sounded in the intense red lighting, heralding that the beginning of a huge worldview had risen, and Kim Lip, wearing a red school uniform connected to the solo and unit worldviews, stood on the altar located in the center of the temple.[7]

Cultural appropriation allegations=

On June 24 a teaser titled '&3' was released for the album. In the video members Hyunjin and Vivi are seen donning an exotic look that features two unique headpieces that share a resemblance with traditional South Asian jewellery - the maang tikka and matha patti. These pieces of jewellery traditionally hold a significant value for Indian people. Reactions by netizens were mixed. While some called it offensive, others took a stand for the members and said that their 'inspired' looks should be considered cultural appreciation rather than cultural appropriation.[8]

Promotion

To celebrate the release of the new album, the group is hosting two online events - Premier Greeting [D&D], a fanmeet to be held on 27 June and an online concert, "ON WAVE [LOONATHEWORLD: &]", which is scheduled to take place on 28 June.[9]

Composition

The title song "PTT (Paint The Town)" is a dance and hip-hop song that contains the most intense and 'explosive' production among the songs that group has ever released. The song contains elements of Bollywood music and depicts the group members' new worldview, and it contains the aspirations of 'Paint The Town' as our own color by independently establishing and reestablishing ourselves without being trapped in taboos or not paying attention to others. The first track and the intro song "&" contains the story of becoming one by breaking the standardized rules and symbols. "Wow" is a song with bouncing tempo and a refreshing up-tempo melody. "Be Honest" is a song full of emotional energy. Both "Dance On My Own" and "A Different Night" feature a dreamy and faint sound and "U R" is a Lofi and R&B song with emotional piano and electric guitar. [10]
