Áine Groogan is a Northern Irish politician who has been Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast since 5 June 2023. A member of the Green Party, Groogan has served as a Belfast City Councillor for the Botanic DEA since 2019.

She is the Green prospective parliamentary candidate for the Belfast South and Mid Down constituency in the next general election.[citation needed]

Early career

Before entering politics, Groogan worked at the Irish embassy in Latvia as a European Union Presidency Assistant during Latvia's Presidency of the EU in 2015.[1]

Political career

Groogan was elected to represent the Botanic DEA on Belfast City Council in the 2019 election. She topped the poll and was elected on the sixth count with 1,401 first preference votes (14.39%).

In the 2023 Belfast City Council election, Groogan was re-elected on the ninth count in Botanic. She received 1,006 first preference votes (9.50%).

Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast (since 2023)

Following the 2023 election, Groogan was appointed Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast alongside Sinn Féin's Ryan Murphy as Lord Mayor. She became the Green Party's first ever politician to be appointed to a mayoral role in Northern Ireland, despite the party losing three seats in the 2023 Northern Ireland local elections. Speaking following her appointment, Groogan stated that she felt her election was a symbol of "the new Belfast."[2]
