100-Year Restoration
The 100-Year Restoration was a 2010 cybercrime, or computer-oriented crime, in which a group of hackers, working under the username @100-year_restoration, hacked the Wikipedia entries for the Pergamonsmuseum, the most visited art museum in Germany.[1] The hackers employed server-routing techniques to establish anonymous location signals.[2] In 2011 the Washington Post reported that these signals could be traced to Jordan, Lebanon, and Moscow.[3] The initial edits were made at 00:00 23 May 2010, on German independence day, bur were not discovered until editing bots detected the visual discrepancies two weeks later. The image-based attack decontextualized controversial holdings from the museum. These included the Epic of Gilgamesh, Ishtar Gate, Market Gate of Miletus, Mshatta Façade, and Pergamon Museum. Critics have cited the museum’s holdings of these objects as marked by colonization, cultural patrimony, and conquest.[4] The hackers removed the image backgrounds and geo-locational data from these encyclopedic entries. Essentially, this co-opted the museum’s tactics of ownership and authorship and re-inscribed them into a digital space. [The hackers have not struck again since the incident, but in the subsequent weeks, Wikipedia officials flagged the editing of the British Museum as a precaution.
While no official statement was published by the hackers, critics have connected the information war they waged to institutional critique, the culture wars, and Carrie Lambert Beatty’s theory of parafiction.[5][6]

Due to the backlash against the hackers' subversion of its platform, Wikipedia has since blocked all images from the incident. Documentation of the incident appears in an account on Flickr, but it is unclear if the page was created by the hackers themselves, or one of their followers.[7]
