The 1434th Engineer Company is an Engineer Company of the United States Army based in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The 1434th is a unit in the Michigan Army National Guard, a reserve component of the US Army. As members of the Engineer branch, they build and maintain Army structures, manipulate terrain, and provide relief during natural disasters.
History
Originally, the 1438th came into existence in 1974. Between 1988 and 1998, the 1438th was deployed to Germany eight times. In 1992, the 1438th began to prepare for the Gulf War in Saudi Arabia but was never deployed. In 1999, the 1438th was deployed to Latvia for the facilitation of training and the development of the Latvian National Armed Forces, in preparation for their later joining of NATO in 2004.[2] From 2003 to 2004, the 1438th completed a tour in Mosul, Iraq. In 2006, the 1438th spent three weeks in Camp Darby, Italy. In 2007, the detachment was upgraded from 64 men to a 110-man company and redesignated as the 1434th engineer company. The first deployment for the company was to Baghdad, Iraq, in 2009 for a total of 10 months. In 2012, the 1434th built K-12 schools in El Salvador. The 1434th also built schools in Liberia in 2015 and 2016. In 2018, the 1434th helped build a new military base in Poland.[3]
