The 14th Infantry Regiment was a military unit in the Philippines active during the Philippine resistance against Japan during the Second World War.
History[edit]
The unit was initially named as the 1st Guerilla Regiment after isolated units converged in Northern Luzon, particularly the 1st Battalion/71st Infantry under Capt. Guillermo Nakar, the 1st Battalion/11th Infantry under Capt. Everett Warner, and Troop C, 26th Cavalry under Capt. Ralph Praeger. They were later joined by Major Manuel Enriquez, Intelligence G2 Officer of the 11th Infantry Division.
They attacked Tuguegarao Air Field in Cagayan in January 1942 destroying Japanese aircraft and killing 100 Japanese soldiers.
General Douglas MacArthur upon learning the existing units operating in Northern Luzon, named the unit the 14th Infantry Regiment and promoted Enriquez, Warner, and Nakar to Majors. He placed the unit under Warner and Enriquez as his executive officer.
Warner went missing and no where to be found late in February 1942 and Enriquez took over the command. Enriquez later surrendered and command fell to Nakar. He continued his guerilla activities in Northern and Central Luzon while the Battle of Bataan was ongoing. After the fall of Bataan in April, Major General Edward P. King sent Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Kalakula to find Nakar and give his order to surrender.
Nakar continued guerilla operations after the fall of Bataan and Corregidor in May. However, he was betrayed in September 1942 and taken prisoner, tortured, and eventually executed after refusing to change his allegiance. The 14th Infantry was absorbed to overall guerilla command of USFIP-NL and fought until MacArthur's return. They fought in Bessang Pass that contributed to the surrender of Japanese forces led by General Tomoyuki Yamashita in 1945.
