The 150th Anniversary Heritage Match will be an international friendly association football match organised by the football associations of Scotland and England to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the first international football match, which was played between the two sides in 1872.[1][2][3]

Background[edit]

The match was announced on 22 November 2022 to celebrate 150 years of international football rivalry between Scotland and England.[1][2][3] The match between the two nations in 1872 is recognised by FIFA as the first ever international football match,[4] and since then the two sides have developed one of the greatest sporting rivalries on the planet,[5][6] having played 115 times over the years with England winning 48 and Scotland winning 41.[7]

The 26 man England squad selected for the game, in addition to their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match against Ukraine played three days prior.[9]

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jack Grealish both withdrew from the squad due to injury on 4 September 2023.[10]
