San Marino v England was the final game to be played in Group I of the First Round during the qualification phase of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The game was played at the San Marino Stadium in Serravelle, San Marino on 15 November between the men's national football teams of San Marino and England. England won the match 10–0, this win meant that they finished 1st in Group I and guaranteed their place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, in which they would go on to go on reach the quarter-finals where they would lose 2-1 to France.

English striker Harry Kane scored four goals in the first-half alone - two of which were penalties. He had completed his hat-trick by the 39th minute.

Background[edit]

England had the experience of playing in the previous 5 editions of the FIFA World Cup, dating back to the 1998 FIFA World Cup. England’s qualification would be confirmed if they won this game.

England had had a very good campaign, already scoring 29 goals in just 9 games. On the other hand, San Marino had been very poor, conceding 36 goals and only scoring 1, they hadn’t picked up a single point over their nine previous games.

This was the final game of the group, but because England had earlier drawn 1-1 to Poland, it meant that they hadn’t already qualified. Despite this, the England manager Gareth Southgate went with a rested eleven.

At this point, England were ranked 5th in the world, behind countries like Italy (4th), France (3rd), Brazil (2nd) and Belgium (1st). Whereas, San Marino were ranked as the worst team in the World, in 210th Place.

The draw for the first round of the 2022 World Cup qualifying paired England and San Marino with Hungary, Poland, Albania and Andorra in Group I.
