State elections were held in the Free State of Prussia on 5 March 1933 to elect all 476 members of the Landtag of Prussia. The election took place simultaneously with the March 1933 German federal election and shortly after Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany on 30 January 1933. Unlike the previous Prussian election in 1932, the vote was conducted under conditions of widespread political repression following the Reichstag fire of 27 February 1933 and the issuance of the Reichstag Fire Decree, which suspended civil liberties and allowed the arrest of many political opponents.
The election resulted in a strong victory for the Nazi Party, which emerged as the largest party in Prussia but failed to win an absolute majority of seats. The Communist Party of Germany was effectively prevented from taking its seats after the arrest of many of its deputies following the Reichstag fire, enabling the Nazis and their allies to secure control of the Landtag.
Following the passage of the Enabling Act of 1933 and the process of Gleichschaltung, the Prussian government was reorganized under Nazi control. Hermann Göring was appointed Minister-President of Prussia on 11 April 1933. The state's political institutions were subsequently subordinated to the centralized structure of the Nazi regime, effectively ending parliamentary democracy in Prussia.
