The 1967 South Bend, Indiana mayoral election was held on November 7, 1967.
This is the last time that a Republican has won a South Bend mayoral election.[1][2]
Nominations[edit]
Republicans re-nominated incumbent mayor Lloyd M. Allen.
Democrats nominated Eugene Pajakowki, who had unsuccessfully sought their nomination four years earlier.[3]
Two independent candidates were also running.[4]
General election[edit]
Allen was endorsed by The South Bend Reformer newspaper.[4]
Allen won a strong reelection,[3] winning by a 10,000 vote margin.[4] Allen received strong support from the city's African American wards.[4] Allen even received a surprising number of votes in the heavily-Democratic 2nd and 6th wards.[4]
Party | Candidate | Votes | % | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Republican | Lloyd M. Allen (incumbent) | 58% | ||
Democratic | Eugene Pajakowki | 36% | ||
Independent | Others | 6% |
Allen's victory had an arguable coattail effect, with Republican City Clerk nominee Cecil Blough winning his race.[4]
