The 1988 Matthews Cup was a friendly football tournament played in May 1988 in the Varsity Stadium, Toronto, between hosts Canada, Greece, and Chile.[1][2]
Played on 21 May, the first match put hosts Canada against Greece, and resulted in a 3–0 win for the European side with a goal by Tasos Mitropoulos and a brace from Nikos Anastopoulos.[2] Greece then defeated Chile 1–0, thus qualifying to the final, where they would face the winner of the match between Canada and Chile, which ended in a 1–0 win to the hosts, courtesy of a last-minute winner from Ian Bridge.[3]
The final was held on 28 May, a rematch of the opening day, with Canada seeking some revenge, which they achieved as they beat Greece 4–2 on a penalty shoot-out after a 0–0 draw.[1]
