Association football is commonly known as football or soccer.
Versions of football have existed for millennia but football as we know it only arose in the mid-19th century. By 1863 a set of rules was codified by the newly formed Football Association.
The international governing body of football is FIFA. The biggest competition is the FIFA World Cup, one of the most watched sporting competitions in the world.
Different rules of football (“codes”) diverged into different sports, such as rugby. In areas where another “code” proved popular, names like “soccer” were used to distinguish. In areas without another popular code, “football” was always the name mostly used.
