The 1 Million March 4 Children was a series of protests carried out in various cities throughout Canada. It has been described as anti-LGBTQ.[1][2][3][4] The protests were carried out as means to advocate to remove "pronouns, gender ideology and mixed bathrooms" in the educational environment.[5] The protesters, who advocated against "gender ideology" in Canadian schools, claim that inappropriate topics regarding sexuality and gender identity are being exposed to children.[6] Several counter-protests were carried out in response.[7]
Background[edit]
Throughout Canada, at least 63 counter-protests were planned to carry out in response to the march.[5] On September 19, 2023, an educational union in Ontario had three offices vandalized.[8]
Protests[edit]
The '1 Million March 4 Children' had protests carried out throughout several cities in Canada, including those in Ontario,[9] British Columbia,[10] Quebec,[11][12] Saskatchewan,[13] Nova Scotia,[14] Alberta,[15] Manitoba,[16] New Brunswick,[17][18] Newfoundland,[19] and Prince Edward Island.[20]
Ontario[edit]
1 Million March 4 Children protests were carried out throughout Ontario, including near Queen's Park in Toronto, where hundreds of protesters chanted "leave our children alone".[21] Over 1,000 counter-protesters gathered in response.[22]
In response to the protests, various school boards in Ontario expressed their support for LGBTQ individuals in schools. In Ottawa, two protesters were arrested for "inciting hatred" by "displaying hateful material".[23] Another person was arrested for disturbance.[24]
Responses[edit]
The 1 Million March 4 Children protests were condemned by Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe,[25] as well as cities such as Whitehorse.[26]
