The 2002 Rafael Nadal tennis season was short, with Nadal playing only 2 matches at ATP level, and spending the majority of his season in Futures and Challenger series events. This season is notable for being the first where Nadal participated in top-level matches. Beginning the year at rank 811, Nadal was not yet qualified for appearances at the major tournaments.
Mallorca Open[edit]
Nadal entered the clay-court Mallorca Open, part of the ATP International Series, at the end of April as a wildcard. He participated in both singles and doubles. In singles, Nadal won his first ever top flight match, defeating 81st-ranked Paraguayan Ramon Delgado in the Round of 32, 6-4 6-4. He then was defeated in the Round of 16 by Belgian Olivier Rochus, 6-2 6-2.[6] In doubles, Nadal and his partner, fellow Spaniard Bartolome Salva-Vidal, were defeated in the first round 2-6 2-6 by South African David Adams and Swede Simon Aspelin.[7] Following these defeats, Nadal returned to the lower-level circuits for the remainder of the season.

Nadal finished the year with a Challenger series record of 4-2 in singles with no titles. He did not participate in any doubles Challengers events.
Futures Events[edit]
Nadal finished the year with a Futures record of 40-9 in singles and 10-9 in doubles. He won 6 singles tournaments at this level, including 5 on clay and 1 on hard courts. He did not reach any doubles finals.[8][9]
Year-end Ranking and Statistics[edit]
Nadal finished his first ATP season with a 1-1 singles record (50% win rate), no titles, and a singles ranking of 200.
