On August 18, 2010, an Aérospatiale SA 315B Lama Cheetah helicopter crashed in the slopes of Teyozwü Hill near Viswema, around 30 km (19 mi) southwest of Kohima, the capital of Nagaland while en route from Rangapahar to Leimakhong. All three people on board were killed on impact.[1][2]
Accident[edit]
The helicopter took off in the morning of 18 August 2010 from the Army's 3 Corps headquarters at Rangapahar near Dimapur, Nagaland at around 08:25 Indian Standard Time (UTC+05:30) for a routine sortie to Leimakhong near Imphal, the capital of Manipur.
The crew of the chopper lost ground contact when the flight was over the mountainous terrain of the Barail Range.
Local inhabitants in the vicinity of Viswema heard the sound of crash at around 08:45 IST.[3]
Victims[edit]
There were 3 Indian Army personnel, one passenger and two crew members on board the chopper, The pilots were Maj. Nikhil Prakash and Maj. Rakesh Sharma.[4] d
Search[edit]
A search-and-rescue effort was launched immediately after the crash comprising of local youths, police and army men. The rescue team found the bodies later in the afternoon near the wreckage of the helicopter lying in the mist-covered thick jungle on the slopes of Teyozwü Hill.[5]
