The 2014 Hamrin ambush took place on 25 August 2014 in the Hamrin area of Diyala Governorate, Iraq. Sunni militants unaffiliated with the Islamic State (ISIL) ambushed and killed four al-Zarkoshi tribesmen, accusing them of participating in the Musab bin Umair mosque massacre three days earlier.[1]

Background

On 22 August 2014, gunmen stormed the Sunni Musab bin Umair mosque in the village of Imam Wais, Diyala, during Friday prayers, killing at least 70 worshippers. Initial accounts blamed Shiite militiamen, sparking outrage and threatening to derail government-formation talks in Baghdad.[2][3]

A later investigation by Human Rights Watch found "convincing evidence" implicating members of the Shiite militia Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq in the killings.[4]

Ambush

On 25 August 2014, Sunni militants ambushed a vehicle carrying four members of the al-Zarkoshi tribe in the Hamrin area. The insurgents claimed the victims had been involved in the massacre at the Musab bin Umair mosque. All four militiamen were killed.[1]

Aftermath

On the following day, Iraqi authorities announced the arrest of three suspects linked to the massacre in the Hamrin region northeast of Baqubah.[5]

In the months after the ambush, local media reported on continuing clashes between the tribal militia and Sunni insurgents in the Hamrin area, underscoring the region's strategic and contested status.[6]

Significance

The ambush highlighted the cycle of retaliatory violence in Diyala during the summer of 2014, where sectarian militias and insurgent groups conducted tit-for-tat attacks. The Hamrin region, a traditional insurgent stronghold, remained volatile for years and continued to see clashes well into the campaign against ISIL.[7]
