2015 United Arab Emirates v Malaysia football match

On 3 September 2015, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia national football teams faced each other in a qualifying match for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in the AFC zone. The match was played at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, where the United Arab Emirates defeated Malaysia by 10 goals to 0.

Background[edit]

Before the game, United Arab Emirates had a 1-0 win against Timor-Leste and had three points, drawing with the Palestine and Saudi Arabia national football teams. Malaysia had a 1-1 draw against Timor-Leste, a 6-0 defeat to Palestine, and had one point.

Prior to this match, Malaysia's biggest defeat was an 8-2 loss to New Zealand on November 16, 1967 in Kuala Lumpur. In the previous meetings between the two teams, United Arab Emirates had won 4 times while Malaysia had won twice.

Match summary[edit]

During the first half of the game, Malaysia conceded 7 goals against the United Arab Emirates. Malaysian goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat was substituted, and Muhammad Zamir Selamat came on in the 29th minute after he conceded 5 goals during his stint. Ali Mabkhout and Ahmed Khalil scored 2 goals each, while Mohanad Salem, Habib Fardan and Mohamed Ahmed all scored 1 goal.

In the second half of the game, Malaysia conceded another 3 goals. Ali Mabkhout scored once more and Ahmed Khalil scored twice. Malaysian goalkeeper Muhammad Zamir Selamat was substituted in the 62nd minute due to an injury, and Khairul Azhan Khalid came on. The match ended 10-0, which was the biggest ever defeat of the Malaysia national football team.

Aftermath[edit]

The following day, as the Malaysian national team arrived back in Malaysia, coach Dollah Salleh resigned. Later, Malaysia finished in the fourth place with 4 points and a win along with a draw and 6 losses, thus eliminating them from the 2018 World Cup qualifying stage. They conceded a total of 30 goals. United Arab Emirates finished as runners up with 17 points and 5 wins, 2 draws and a loss thus advancing to the third round of the qualification stage.
