At around 21:54 GMT on 25 November 2017, a Renault Clio car, which was reported as stolen in Headingley,[1] mounted the pavement and crashed into a tree on the B6157 Stonegate Road in the Meanwood area of the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England.[2] Five people were killed in the crash.[2] Two more people, believed to be those who stole the vehicle, suffered injuries and were taken into police custody.[2] Police have now advised that all of the fatalities were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.[3]

West Yorkshire Police said that they had responded to a scene of "complete carnage" in the aftermath of the crash.[4] Three of the victims who were killed in the crash were children, including two brothers, aged 12 and 14.[4] The remaining fatalities were aged 15, 24 and 28.[4] At the scene, police arrested two 15-year-old boys on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.[4]

Following the crash, Stonegate Road - a busy arterial route running north out of Leeds city centre - was closed between the junctions with Parkside Avenue and Parkside Road/Stainbeck Lane. The closure caused disruption to public transport, with bus services 38 and 52, operated by Yorkshire Tiger and First West Yorkshire respectively, diverting away from the scene of the crash via Tongue Lane.[5]

The crash was the second deadliest vehicle accident to occur in the United Kingdom in 2017, following a minibus accident on the M1 motorway almost exactly three months earlier in which eight people were killed.[6]
