Tampa Back the Blue mural

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Back the Blue mural in Tampa, Florida is a pro-Blue Lives Matter mural that was painted on Madison St, the road adjacent to the headquarters of the Tampa Police Department.[1] It was painted by roughly 40 people of the organizations known as Team South Florida, Back the Blue Florida, and Community Patriots of Tampa over the course of the Saturday prior to its unveiling on August 2, 2020, but lacked the permits necessary to paint the mural and painted it anyway.[2][3]

History[edit]

An application was filed to paint a mural on the road some time prior to it being unveiled. It was not formally approved nor disapproved, but the organizations proceeded to make the mural and blocked off the road by placing traffic cones.[4] It was painted during Saturday, August 1, 2020 with the advantage of false road blocks. The road was reopened on August 2, 2020, where people were yet again able to drive on the road and it subsequently going viral on the internet.

Reception[edit]

The mural has been panned throughout the internet.[5][6] Many users on social media outlets have criticized it, with criticisms including the difficulty to comprehend the lettering on the mural and the overall disapproval of the Blue Lives Matter countermovement.[7] Patton Oswalt sarcastically statedhis intention to "Blrbk the Blub" [sic] on Twitter,[8] and user @GRIFTSH0P's tweet stating "[he] cannot emphasize enough just how shitty this looks" amassing 15,000 retweets and comments and nearly 100,000 likes.[9].
