2020 Professional Sports Walkout
The 2020 Professional Sports Walkouts are a series of walkouts in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Given the close proximity and the location to Kenosha, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Milwaukee Brewers walked out of their games, while the Green Bay Packers released a statement addressing the shooting. The Orlando Magic, who were initially supposed to play Game 5 in the NBA Bubble also walked out, with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Portland Trail Blazers, the Houston Rockets, and the Oklahoma City Thunder also walking out. The NBA later had a discussion about whether or not to continue the season, with all teams except the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers voting to continue the season. The Cincinnati Reds, who were supposed to play the Milwaukee Brewers that day also postponed their game, with the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants postponing their games. In the WNBA, the Atlanta Dream, the Washington Mystics, Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, Connecticut Sun, and the Phoenix Mercury also postponed their games. In the NFL, the Detroit Lions had cancelled their practice. In the MLS, Inter Miami FC, Atlanta United FC, FC Dallas, the Colorado Rapids, Real Salt Lake, LAFC, the San Jose Earthquakes, the Portland Timbers, the LA Galaxy, and the Seattle Sounders all postponed their games, with the exception of the Nashville SC and Orlando City playing. Famed tennis player Naomi Osaka stated that she would not play in the Western and Southern Open. While the NHL did not participate in the walkouts, they held a moment of reflection to honor Jacob Blake.
