On 22 December 2020, A train carrying 29,000 gallons of crude oil was intentionally derailed by ecoterrorists in Custer, Washington, in the Whatcom County area.

History[edit]

In the year 2020, investigators discovered 41 different instances of shunts placed on BNSF railroad tracks in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Investigators believe that these were efforts by ecoterrorists to halt the construction of an oil pipeline on the other side of the US-Canadian border in British Columbia.[2] Just a month before this incident, two local women, Samantha Frances Brooks and Ellen Brennan Reiche, were arrested on charges of terrorism and accused of placing shunts on a track just outside of Bellingham.[3][4][5][6][7]. In July 2021, Brooks plead Guilty to Terror charges and was later accepted by a Federal Judge.[8]

An employee for the rail union reportedly told investigators that the derailment was caused by sabotage.[9]

No injuries were reported. However, the NTSB incident report stated that dozens of people nearby had been evacuated and about 29,000 gallons of crude oil were discharged.[10] Ten tank cars derailed and five caught fire.

Aftermath[edit]

The derailment in Custer, Washington prompted a joint response by the FBI, Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission, Washington State Patrol, Whatcom County Emergency Management, and local fire agencies. BNSF Police had also increased their presence in Whatcom County following the attacks.[11]
