The men's artistic individual all-around at the 2021 All Japan Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held on 16 and 18 April 2021 at Takasaki Arena in Gunma, Japan.[1] The maximum number of 90 gymnasts from multiple clubs participated in the event.[2] Daiki Hashimoto from Juntendo University won the title, while Wataru Tanigawa and Kazuma Kaya from Central Sports achieved second & third positions respectively.[3][4]
The competition also served as the main national trials for the 2020 Summer Olympics. The three medalists along with top qualifier, Takeru Kitazono, were later selected to compete in team event.[4] Hashimoto's all-around final score, 88.532, were also the highest of the year, until being surpassed by Zhang Boheng at the Chinese Olympic Trial.[5]
Background[edit]
This was the 75th appearance of the men's individual all-around, as it has been held every year since 1947, with Takasaki became the host for the second consecutive year. Due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 event was postponed until December, making the two competitions only 4 months apart. Except for Kohei Uchimura, who retired from all-around and only focused on individual apparatuses, all medalists since 2018, Kazuma Kaya, Kakeru Tanigawa, Takeru Kitazono, Kenzo Shirai, Wataru Tanigawa, and Kazuyuki Takeda all qualified for the final.
Qualification[edit]
The maximum of 90 male gymnasts would be qualified to compete for the men's individual all-around event, following these criteria:[2]
- 2020 All Japan Artistic Gymnastics Championships top ranks: 44 gymnasts.
- National Tryout (tournament 3): 18 gymnasts.
- Men's Junior Strengthening Department recommendation: 5 gymnasts.
- Japan Gymnastics Association recommendation: 5 gymnasts.
- 2021 Summer Universiade shortlist: 18 gymnasts.
- 53rd All Japan Senior Gymnastics Championships top team: 6 slots.
- Gakuren recommendation: 12 gymnasts.
Competition format[edit]
The top 30 qualifiers in the preliminary round advanced to the final. All gymnasts performed an additional exercise on each apparatus. Scoring applied to the 2017-21 Code of Points, and the final results were counted with scores from both rounds.
