2021 Belawan riots
On 18 July 2021, teenager streetfights in Belawan, Medan, developed into widespread riots and looting.[1][2] Teenagers armed with sharp weapons and rocks attacked each other, some even armed with molotov cocktails.[3] The fight escalated on early morning of 21 July 2021, with dozens of stores and houses burned down and widespread looting happened in the area.[1] The riots happened at the same time when Medan city government planned to extend COVID-19 restrictions to August.[3] A church was targeted by molotov cocktails and almost burned down.[4] Police personnel have been deployed to disperse the riot and prevent further fighting from happening. Due to fear of future riots and looting, some citizens sought refuge and moved their goods from their store.[5][6]
Background
The fighting happened between groups of teenagers, mostly underage whom have been involved in street fighting occasionally beforehand.[7]
