The 2021 Indian Premier League is officially called Vivo IPL.[2] In 2019, the BCCI released the document for the proposed dates for the fourteenth season of the Indian Premier League, and revealing international dates for the following years. In 2020 the IPL operates between the dates of April 1 to May 31 2020, followed by the Asia Cup in September 2020 and World T20 in October-November 2020. In 2021 IPL will be held between the dates of March 31 to May 30 2021, followed by the back to back 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.[3]

On ESPNcricinfo, the chairman of the United States cricket team stated that he plans to release the US Twenty20 team and plans to put a few US players in IPL.[4][5] According to ESPNcricinfo, new players will be brought to IPL during 2020/2021, including players such as Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair and Ishan Porel.[6] Karun Nair, having previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils, will be playing in 2021 for the Kings XI Punjab in the IPL.[7] Also new to IPL, Shivam Dube will play for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2021. In the 2020 IPL Auction on December 19, 2019, Dube was retained to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore during the 2020-2025 IPL period.[8] Mahendra Singh Dhoni is still contracted for the IPL, but however, he is expected to be retiring somewhere around the year of 2021.[9][10]

Sixty matches are to be played.The first match comes on March 22, 2021 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai between CSK and RCB.[11] From 2021, 9 teams will compete.[12] It is possible that instead a tenth team could emerge.[13]
