The 2021 Loyalty Islands Earthquake Was a Magnitude 7.7Mw  Earthquake That Occurred on February 10, 2021. The Earthquake Was One Of the Largest in New Caledonia and Tsunami waves Up to 78 cm (31 in) Were Observed in Lenakel, Vanuatu. it is Currently the 2nd Largest Earthquake of 2021, Behind An 8.1 Earthquake in New Zealand a Month Later

Tectonic Setting[edit]

The Mw 7.7 earthquake was located about 415 km to the east of the island of New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific Ocean and occurred as the result of low angle thrust faulting on or near the plate boundary interface between the Australia and Pacific plates. Focal mechanism solutions indicate the earthquake occurred on either a shallow fault striking west and dipping to the north, or on a steep fault striking east. The earthquake was preceeded by two foreshocks of 6.1Mw  and Mw 6.0 an hour before the earthquake. At the location of the earthquake, the Indo-Australian plate moves towards the east-northeast with respect to the Pacific at a rate of approximately 75 mm/yr. At the South New Hebrides Trench, Australia lithosphere converges with and sinks beneath the Pacific Plate, descending into the mantle and forming the New Hebrides/Vanuatu subduction zone, stretching from New Caledonia in the south to the Santa Cruz Islands in the north, a distance of about 1,600 km. The earthquake occurred in close vicinity to the New Hebrides trench, and its location, depth and focal mechanism solution are all consistent with it occurring on the subduction zone interface between the two plates.

Earthquake[edit]

The Earthquake Was initially Reported as a Mw 7.9 by The USGS Before Being Downgraded to Mw 7.7. This Was The Largest Earthquake in Oceania Since the 2018 Fiji earthquake, And Globally The Largest earthquake Since the July 2020 Alaska Peninsula earthquake
