On the night of January 22, 2021 at 8:23 PM PST, an earthquake measuring a moment magnitude of 7.0 struck the Talaud Islands, south of Mindanao and Southern Visayas. It reached a Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) of VI (Strong), and a PEIS (PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale) intensity of V (Strong).[2]

Tectonic setting[edit]

The Philippine islands were formed in evolutionary processes involving subductions, and collisions. Earthquakes are frequent there as a result of the collision processes between the Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) and the Sunda Plate (SP). The slip convergence between PSP and the SP boundary is obliquely accommodated by the Philippine fault system, which is a major left-lateral strike-slip fault system. The Philippine fault has been slipping at a rate of 33 ± 11 mm/yr in the northern and central Leyte sections. The southern part of the Philippine fault is mainly located in eastern Mindanao and constitutes a complex fault system with discrete strands and splays. Mindanao island is located on the complex collision boundary between the SP and the PSP. Some parts of the convergence between these plates are consumed by the Philippine fault and subduction at the Cotabato trench.

Earthquake and aftershocks[edit]

A moderately strong earthquake reaching Mw  7.0 was recorded by the United States Geological Survey,[3] European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre[4] and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.[5] In the Davao Region, the earthquake was felt V. Intensity V was also felt in South Cotabato and Sarangani Province. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stated that damage and aftershocks are possible.

This was the first magnitude 7.0 earthquake to occur in Mindanao in 3 years, the last magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred in Mindanao on December 29, 2018, with a maximum intensity of V.[6]

Damage[edit]

Philippines[edit]

No casualties were reported in the Philippines due to the earthquake, although it caused general panic. Some structural damage was observed to the city hall of General Santos City.[11]

Indonesia[edit]

In the Talaud Islands of North Sulawesi, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency said the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.[12] The earthquake was described as strong and lasted for three minutes, causing mass panic among village residents.[13] Although no casualties were reported, the earthquake damaged five homes and one church on the island. A preliminary assessment showed that at least two houses had collapsed. Other residential buildings as well as a hospital were slightly damaged. There was also damage to the infrastructure, which led, among other things, to widespread power outages on the islands.[14][15][16]
