The 2022 Shreveport mayoral election occurred on November 8, 2022, with a runoff election on December 10 due to no candidate obtaining a majority in the first round. It determined the next mayor of Shreveport, Louisiana. Incumbent Democratic mayor Adrian Perkins sought re-election but finished fourth in the general election. Former Shreveport City Councillor Tom Arceneaux, a Republican, and Louisiana state senator Gregory Tarver, a Democrat, advanced to the runoff. Other eliminated candidates included Caddo Parish Commission president Mario Chavez and city councillor LeVette Fuller.[1]
In the runoff, Perkins and the two previous mayors of Shreveport, all black Democrats, endorsed Arceneaux, a white Republican, over Tarver, a black Democrat. They believed Arceneaux was best for the job, criticizing Tarver for voting against the Justice Reinvestment Act. Tarver was endorsed by prominent Democrats, including Governor John Bel Edwards, and Republicans like Louisiana Senate president Page Cortez.[2]
The runoff centered on crime. Tarver ran a "tough on crime" campaign, while Arceneaux proposed improving neighborhoods affected by blight. Both denied wrongdoing amidst attack ads and called for their removal.[3]
Arceneaux won with 56% of the vote to Tarver's 44%, marking the first Republican victory since 1994.[4][5]
