The 2023 World Aquatics Championships will be the 20th FINA World Aquatics Championships.

Host selection[edit]

In March 2015, it was announced that Budapest would host the 2017 Championships instead of the 2021 Championships. This decision came after Guadalajara withdrew from organizing the 2017 Championships due to financial reasons. Consequently, the 2023 bidding procedure was opened alongside the bidding procedure for the 2021 event.[1]

On 9 June 2015, FINA reported receiving expressions of interest for the 2021 and 2023 Championships from several countries including Argentina, Australia, China, Germany, Japan, Turkey, and Qatar. An information meeting was organized for the interested nations and cities on 30 June 2015.[2] Representatives from six countries attended this meeting:[3][4]

  • Abu Dhabi and Dubai (United Arab Emirates)
  • Buenos Aires (Argentina)
  • Doha (Qatar)
  • Fukuoka and Tokyo (Japan)
  • Istanbul (Turkey)
  • Nanjing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou (China)

On November 8, 2015, in Dubai, each bidder made a formal presentation to the FINA Bureau, who then voted and announced the organizers of the 2021 and 2023 events.
