The 2024 AT&T outage is an ongoing unplanned outage of AT&T's cellular network services in the US, first reported on February 22, 2024, at 3:50 AM EST. The outage caused disruption across the country, affecting personal, business, and municipal lines. The outage directly affected at least 74,000 people across the United States, according to Downdetector, but is estimated to be much higher.[1]

Background[edit]

AT&T is the largest telecommunications provider in the United States, providing services to 241 million customers with a 5G network that is reachable to 295 million people.[2][3] Smaller carriers also utilize AT&T's network including Cricket Wireless. In addition to overall telecommunications, AT&T is the largest provider of mobile services in the country, with a market share of about 47%.[4]

Summary[edit]

Outage[edit]

The outage began in the early morning of February 22 at approximately 3:50 AM EST but outage reports began to surge around 7:00 AM. Customers reported their phones reporting it had no network connectivity or that their phone could only make emergency calls. Most users were able to make calls if they were connected to a WiFi network.[5][6][7][8]

During the blackout, two solar flares occurred, however, the Space Weather Prediction Center stated that the solar flares were “unlikely to be related” to the communications blackout.[9] The blackout prompted the United States government to launch an investigation into the possibility of a cyber attack being the cause of the blackout.[10] AT&T however later claimed that it wasn't the result of a cyber attack, but rather a poorly timed server update.[11]

Restoration[edit]

At 9:00 AM, AT&T reported that it was working to resolve the issue and claimed that 75% of the network had been restored for users by 11:20 AM.[12] By 3:13 PM, AT&T had said that the network was fully restored.
