On February 1, 2024, a Beechcraft Bonanza V35 crashed into a mobile home park in Clearwater, Florida, killing three people, two on the ground and the single pilot after a reported engine failure. The plane and mobile home were completely destroyed with a total of four mobile homes damaged.[1][2]

Details[edit]

On February 1, 2024, a Beechcraft Bonanza V35, tail number N6659L was traveling from Vero Beach Regional Airport in Indian River County, Florida to Clearwater Air Park in Clearwater, Florida. The flight took off at 06:08 PM EST from Vero Beach Regional Airport and was inbound to Clearwater Air Park. The pilot was on approach to land and was trying to align with runway 34 at Clearwater Air Park when he said he wanted to change frequencies to activate the runway lights. Seconds later, the pilot cancelled the IFR clearance and returned back to the original frequency. When the pilot returned to the original frequency, he reported to air traffic control at St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport that he was "losing engine"[3][4] and declared a mayday over the radio. Moments later, a nearby pilot reported to air traffic control that the plane "went down hard" and that "they’re in flames". Another nearby pilot also reported that it "looks like there is a structure fire down there" and that "it looks like they went into a house".[5] At 7:08 PM EST, the Clearwater Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 2647 Pagoda Dr in the Bayside Waters mobile home park located in Clearwater; at this same time was a report that a plane was experiencing an emergency at an airport. When Clearwater Fire Department arrived at 7:15 PM EST, they found four mobile homes heavily involved in flames. Three of the mobile homes were cleared and no injuries were reported.[6] The mobile home at 2647 Pagoda Dr was the home struck by the Beechcraft Bonanza V35; two individuals inside that mobile home were killed due to the plane crash along with the single pilot of the plane. The pilot was later identified as Jemin Patel, 58 years of age. The two victims were identified as Mary Ellen Pender, 54 years of age who was visiting the home at 2647 Pagoda Dr, and Martha Parry, 86 years of age who was a resident of the mobile home.[7] According to Clearwater Fire Rescue, there had been up to nine people inside the mobile home shortly before the crash, but only two remained inside the home at the time of the crash.[8] It is reported that the plane experienced an engine failure which resulted in the crash at 7:06 PM EST after being in the air for 58 minutes.[9] The Beechcraft Bonanza V35 owned by Control Data Inc and flew by the pilot Jemin Patel was manufactured in 1979 and was 44 years of age.[10] The weather was clear at the time of the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the crash and after the on-scene investigation, the agency will transport the wreckage to a secure facility for closer inspection.
