On 23 January 2024, a Myanmar Air Force Shaanxi Y-8 plane skidded off the tarmac at Lengpui Airport, in northeast India's Mizoram, injuring 12 of the 14 people on board[1] and splitting the aircraft into two.[2] There were no fatalities.
This was the second Myanmar Air Force crash after the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état.[3]
Incident[edit]
Burmese soldiers have been fleeing to Mizoram from the ongoing civil war. 92 soldiers were left in Mizoram, and the Myanmar army plane came to Mizoram to take its' remaining soldiers back.[citation needed]
When the aircraft touched down at Lengpui at 10:19 local time (4:49 UTC), due to "sudden engine failure" according to the Burmese junta, it had skidded off the runway into a ravine.[4]
Aftermath[edit]
Local Mizo media broadcast footage of the crash's aftermath, showing the bent fuselage of the transport plane, which had carved a gash through tall grass after sliding down an embankment.
Four crew members were reported critically injured and were sent to Lengpui Hospital. The ambulance that was supposed to carry the four injured soldiers also crashed by driving under the Lengpui Airport flyover and did not fit.[5]
