The 2024 French-Russian Aerial incident was an Aerial dispute happening between France and Russia in the Black Sea on March 5 2024, where Russia intercepted 3 French aircraft in which they claimed violated international air space.
Background[edit]
On March 5, 2024, President Emmanuel Macron made a visit to Prague, engaging in discussions with the Czech president and delivering a speech emphasizing the importance of unity among Western allies in support of Ukraine. He urged against capitulation, warning that Russia's actions had reached an alarming level of momentum.[1][2][3]
Incident[edit]
On the same day, three French military aircraft, including one Awacs E-3 aircraft and two Dassault Rafale aircraft, flew over the Black Sea. However, their presence was detected by a Russian radar, prompting the dispatch of a SU-27 fighter jet by Russia. There were concerns in Russia that the aircraft might violate international airspace. Upon sighting the SU-27, the three French aircraft made a U-turn and no violation was recorded, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defence.[4][5][6][7]
However, French news channel TF1 received confirmation from the French Ministry of Defence that the aircraft were 40 kilometers away from Russian airspace, indicating that they did not violate any airspace. This incident occurred just one week after a French Mirage 2000 intercepted a Russian intelligence apparatus off the coast of Estonia in the Baltic Sea.[8][9]
