On 21 February 2024, a part of a bridge collapsed in Lochem, Netherlands, leaving two dead and leaving another two to five injured.[1]

Background

It is understood that bridge collapses or construction accidents in general in the Netherlands rarely happen.[2]

Events

A part of a canal bridge that is being built over the Twentekanaal by Royal BAM Group in the city of Lochem collapsed shortly after 11:00am (local time) on 21 February 2024.[3][4] Workmen had been hoisting arches when the disaster happened.[5] The rescue operation included three trauma teams by helicopters and many emergency vehicles.[6]

According to experts, the cranes were good enough for the job and that the disaster was caused by a broken lifting point.[7]

The two people who died are not workers of Royal BAM Group, one of the two was working for Belgian construction company Aertssen and the other was a Polish person.[8][3] The two injured people are Belgian people.[8][3] The injured people were hospitalized.[3] One of the injured people left the hospital on 23 February.[9]

Investigation

The collapse of the bridge is put under investigation by the Nederlandse Arbeidsinspectie [nl].[2] No work on the bridge will be done for at least a week due to the investigation.[10][3]

Reactions

Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, said the accident was "tragic" and he wished the victims "much strength".[2]
