2024 Pune car crash

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

On 19 May 2024, a 17-year-old motorist struck a two-wheeler in Pune, resulting in the death of two people.

Crash

The crash happened at around 3:15 in the morning on 19 May 2024, at Kalyani Nagar junction. The two victims were on a motorcycle, which was struck by a Porsche Taycan being driven by a 17-year-old.[1]

The police collected CCTV footage which showed the accused drinking prior to the incident. They also reported that the car was going at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour when the crash occurred.[2]

Legal proceedings

A case was registered against the boy under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which deals with drunk driving. He was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. The board granted him bail, and issued an order for him to study traffic rules and regulations at the Road Traffic Organisation, and to write a 300-word essay about road accidents.[3]

The accused's father was arrested on 22 May, and a case was registered against him for child neglect, and supplying intoxicating substances to a minor. Cases were also registered against the owners and staff of the two pubs which the accused had visited prior to the accident.[4][5] The two pubs were sealed by the state excise department.[6][7][8] In a crackdown on illegal activities by pubs, two other pubs which had been constructed illegally were demolished.[9]

On 22 May, the juvenile court cancelled the bail which had been granted, and ordered the accused to be remanded.[10]

Controversy

The decision of the court to award the accused bail, with its order to write a 300-word essay led to widespread controversy. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, as well as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi issued statements of condemnation.[11][12][13]
