On June 19, 2026, at approximately 11:00 A.M. ET, a fire broke out in Bayahibe, La Altagracia at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach hotel, killing one person and forcing around 1,700 people to evacuate.[1][2][3]
Incident
On June 19, 2026, a fire broke out in Bayahíbe, Dominican Republic, at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach hotel, killing Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian woman, and forcing about 1,700 guests to evacuate.[4][5][6] The DAEH emergency services said nine people were injured, with three being taken to medical facilities and six others being treated at the scene.[7][8][9]
Amanda Santana, a hotel executive, said, “Unfortunately, they lost their identity documents, including their passports."[10] Hotel management said they were working closely with the police to expedite reports online for guests; they also stated that guests have been relocated to hotels in Punta Cana and Bayahibe.[10][11]
As of June 2026, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Center said it seemed the fire spread rapidly due to high winds and because part of the resort’s roof was made of thatch.[12][13] Its director General Manuel Méndez also said authorities were investigating the cause of the Italian woman’s death, also stating that tourism activities in the area were continuing as normal.[10] Other nearby resorts were not damaged during the fire.[13]
