The 2028 American General Strike is a general strike proposed by the United Auto Workers (UAW) to start on May 1st, International Workers' Day, 2028.[1] The UAW organized for their contracts with the Big Three, General Motors, Ford and Stellantis (historically Chrysler), to run out on May 1st 2028, going on strike from there, and has urged other unions to do the same.[2] They have also added that they wish to expand the strike beyond the Big Three, to other large automobile manufacturers.[2] In a speech he given at the UAW national political conference, UAW president Shawn Fain stated that "We have to pay for our sins of the past. Back in 1980 when Reagan at the time fired patco workers, everybody in this country should have stood up and walked the hell out. We missed the opportunity then, but we’re not going to miss it in 2028. That’s the plan. We want a general strike. We want everybody walking out".[1] Fain went on to explain that the type of strike he wants would be similar to that of general strikes outside the United States, as he put it, "just like they have in other countries".[1] This is in reference to the fact that general strikes are very uncommon in the United States compared to other countries, particularly countries in Europe that have a much longer history of labor organizing.[2][3]
Participants[edit]
No other major union has publicly announced participation in the general strike.[2]
