2U4U is a British hip hop group formed in Rugby, England, United Kingdom in 2016.[1] The group was originally composed of brothers, musicians and producers ATMA and Ranbir,[2] and rappers and songwriters My Rugema and Badcal.[3] In its current form, the group comprises ATMA, Ranbir and My Rugema.[4]
2U4U’s demo[5] of a remix of "1nce Again" by the hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest (released as the first single from their fourth album Beats, Rhymes and Life) led to the group’s discovery in May 2016 by world renowned BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ Benji B on his flagship ‘Future Beats’ radio show.[6]
Following thereafter the release of two promotional singles (“Kings of Africa”[7] in September 2017, and “Home”[8] in December 2017) and two lead singles from their debut EP (“Fall”[9] in February 2018, and “Gurl”[10] in June 2018), the group released the EP (“Butter”)[11] in August 2018 to critical acclaim from across both the mainstream and underground UK hip hop and rap scene for the group’s distinctive, idiosyncratic production and highly lyrical songs.[12] This led to the group’s “Kings of Africa” single being featured in Netflix’s Top Boy programme in its third series in 2019.[13]
Early life
2U4U’s musicians and producers ATMA and Ranbir, and rapper and songwriter My Rugema, are from Rugby, England.[14]
ATMA and My Rugema met during study at Lawrence Sheriff School, Rugby, following which ATMA introduced the budding rapper and songwriter to Ranbir.[15] Following this introduction, the trio bonded over a shared love of predominantly 1990s to early 2000s hip hop and neo-soul.[16]
