The 2nd Florida Cavalry was a Confederate cavalry regiment from the American Civil War[1].[2] Formed in Jacksonville, Fl in July of 1861, Comprised of men from multiple counties to include St. John, Marion, Gadsden, Madison,[3] and Sumter to name a few. Also note although Lake County was not created until 1887, some members of this regiment listed their place of enlistment as somewhere in Lake County.
[4]It's commanders were Colonel John Carraway Smith, Lt. Colonel Abner H. McCormick and Major Robert Harrison. NCO Sergeant Major W. A. Forward.[5][1]The regiment's most known company commander was arguably Captain John J Dickinson[6][2], the "Swamp Fox" of Florida.[7]
The regiment fought in battles such as Olustee, Gainesville, Braddock's Farm, and Natural Bridge.[8][3]
