3Dchat is an online virtual world that started re-development in 2009. It was re-launched into open beta in July 2010[1] and is a combination of a social network and an online virtual world that lets users interact via their personal avatars with other 3Dchat users in the online three-dimensional community via the use of their Internet-capable computers. 3Dchat is intended for people over the age of 17 and has partnered with age verifications service providers Aristotle and VeryFY to ensure underage users do not gain access.[2]

    History[edit]

3Dchat's corporate offices are based in Mount Pleasant, S.C., and was created by its current CEO Glenn Garritano, an entrepreneur who started a video store chain in the early 1990s. He then got involved in the virtual reality craze that started in the late 1990s. The company started the design and layout of the 3Dchat world in 2008 and currently has 30 employees. It is funded by undisclosed angel investors.[1]

3DChat is being developed in conjunction with GolemLabs, a video game development company based in Montreal Canada. GolemLabs was founded in 2000 and has launched other games called The Inlaws, SuperPower and SuperPower 2.[3] GolemLabs utilizes Emergent’s Gamebryo software engine to create high-end graphics for the virtual world and animated characters known as avatars.[1]

    Economy[edit]

3Dchat gives a monthly salary to premium members that can be used to purchase in world virtual items and features. Each month a user will receive their "3D Dollars" salary and rent/utilities will be deducted for continued use of the 3Dchat community. 3Dchat is free-to-play and membership does not require any real world payment.[4]

3Dchats Beta Testers program was launched in November 2011. This program was created to give new and current users the ability to police 3Dchat and help the community, as well as test 3Dchat for any issues or bugs in the system.[5]

    Avatars[edit]

3Dchat provides users the capability to create a personal avatar which is a virtual representation their real world self while your in the 3Dchat. Users will have the ability to modify their body type, skin tone, shape, and face.[6]

    Social community[edit]

In addition to the virtual world, 3Dchat also launched a web based social network called My 3Dchat in 2009. This social network allows users to communicate and interact outside of the virtual space as well as offers a bridge between the internet and the virtual world itself.
