3G Boss is a reality television show at the UK-based Bangladeshi TV broadcaster Channel S aimed at promoting the entrepreneurial skills of 3rd generation British Bangladeshis.[1][full citation needed] The programme brings together twelve young people between the ages of 14 and 18, selected from hundreds of applicants, to compete in various business-related tasks for a paid internship with the Canary Wharf Group.[2] The contestants compete in two teams, and at least one contestant is eliminated each week. The runner-up is offered an internship with the lead sponsor, telecommunications firm Simplecall.[3] The first series was filmed from mid-August to mid-October 2015[4] on various sites across East London including the Canary Wharf estate and Simplecall's head office on the Isle of Dogs. Boardroom scenes were shot on the 10th floor of One Canada Square. The show began airing weekly from 12 December 2015 as Channel S's tenth anniversary blockbuster.[5][full citation needed] 3G Boss is part of Canary Wharf Group's commitment to working with the local community.[6]
3G Boss is hosted by its concept creator Zahin Ahmed. The current Chief Judge is Howard Dawber, the Director of Strategy at the Canary Wharf Group.[7][8] He is assisted by judges Kuhinoor Kabir, previously a Senior Consultant at a recruitment firm for the financial services sector,[9][10] and Sanawar Choudhury, the host of a Channel S business talk show. The show is coupled with an hour-long live talk show named 'Behind the Boss' at the end of each episode.[11][full citation needed] Hosted by British Bangladeshi broadcaster Nadia Ali, Behind the Boss discusses the task with the eliminated contestant and other relevant guests, typically members of the production team or sponsor representatives.[12]
3G Preview[edit]
In the build-up to 3G Boss, a live talk show called 3G Preview (promoted as 3G Boss Preview) aired every fortnight on Channel S.[13][14] The talk show aimed to encourage people to register for the main show. Notable guests included:
- Syed Ahmed - known for being a 2007 Apprentice candidate and the founder of design and manufacturing hand dryer company SAVortex
- Zeeshan Shah - known for being a 2013 Apprentice candidate
- Pure Movements - British Bangladeshi comedy actors
- Islah Abdur-Rahman - from the British comedy web series, the Corner Shop Show
- Dengyan San - Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets

Series 1 Episodes[edit]
Week 1: The Interviews[edit]
- Air Date: 12 December 2015
- Thirty selected applicants were intensively interviewed by Howard, Kuhinoor and Sanawar who picked twelve candidates to continue to the task-based stages.
- Result: Afra, Atifa, Azmaeen, Farhana, Foyez, Hussain, Jawwad, Lamisha, Nabila, Prianto, Radh and Sadia selected to compete in the tasks.
- Warnings to contestants: Howard warned that some of the contestants were only selected by the 'very slimmest of margins'. He went on to say, 'this isn't a joke now. Next week, someone will be leaving the competition and going home'.
- Behind the Boss guests: Howard Dawber (Chief Judge), Taz Choudhury (Executive Producer), Zahin Ahmed (host of 3G Boss), Minhaj Kibriyah (Director of 3G Boss), and Sanawar Choudhury and Kuhinoor Kabir (assisting judges)
Week 2: Cook It and Sell It[edit]
- Air Date: 19 December 2015
- Team Apex: Jawwad (Team Manager), Azmaeen, Foyez, Hussain, Prianto and Radh.
- Team Stellar: Nabila (Team Manager), Afra, Atifa, Farhana, Lamisha and Sadia.
- Task: Design lunch boxes and create new desserts and drinks to sell to the general public and to restaurant customers, and wait on restaurant customers. The team that generates the most profit wins.
- Team managers' performance: Both Radh and Jawwad put themselves up for Apex's team manager, but only Prianto voted for Radh. Jawwad, claiming to have more sales experience, commanded the majority support of the team. Prianto and Radh, in particular, were not initially pleased with Jawwad's leadership - he was often absent from the restaurant and was difficult to contact - but they attributed Apex's lack of coordination to little experience in the catering industry. Jawwad was later commended for Apex's sales in the boardroom. Afra suggested that Nabila should become Stellar's team manager - Nabila accepted and the move went unopposed. Nabila was said to have placed unorganised team members in the wrong roles, and she was challenged over her decision to send two team members to Asda as opposed to the nearby Sainsbury's to shop for dessert and drink ingredients (whilst Apex bought their ingredients and equipment from local stores on Brick Lane). On Behind the Boss, she was accused of forming a dominating coalition with Sadia to protect herself in the boardroom in the event of a loss. Nabila acknowledged some of her shortcomings in the final boardroom, whilst noting her significant volume of sales.
- Result: Apex had a profit of £352.00, and Stellar had a profit of £255.06
- Winner: Apex - By £96.94
- Reward: Tour of the Canary Wharf estate
- Brought back into the boardroom: Nabila, Atifa and Farhana
- Eliminated: Farhana - For spending a long time at the supermarket, for coming across as too quiet during the day, and for poorly defending herself in the boardroom.
- Warnings to contestants: Sadia was late to arrive at Altab Ali Park for the task's morning briefing; Kuhinoor said that Sadia had "let her team down already". She warned contestants that future tardiness would be noted and penalised.
- Behind the Boss guests: Farhana Ahmed (eliminated contestant), Nazir Ahmed (father of Farhana), Sharif Islam and Fahi Shah (sponsor restaurants' representatives), Zahin Ahmed (host of 3G Boss) and Wazid Hasan Shelim (Director of catering management business Pride of Asia)
Week 3: Help the Needy[edit]
- Air Date: 26 December 2015
- Team Oasis: Radh (Team Manager), Azmaeen, Hussain, Lamisha, and Nabila.
- Team Utopia: Sadia (Team Manager), Afra, Atifa, Foyez, Jawwad, and Prianto.
- Task: Raise funds for the 3G Boss charity partner. The team that raises the most money wins.
- Team managers' performance: Hussain put himself up for Oasis's team manager, but Radh pursuaded the other members of the team to back him. Radh immediately appointed Hussain as his deputy and later gave him control over his and Nabila's fundraising activities. Radh stayed in the office for the entire day, raising funds through online, phone and text donations. His leadership was challenged by Azmaeen's decision to set up an independent online donation campaign; Radh attributed this to Azmaeen's failure to communicate with the team prior to the day of the task. Despite having difficulties in controlling Lamisha and Azmaeen, Radh was noted for keeping tabs on all his team members, and his decisions to put Nabila in charge of social media and publicity, and to grant Hussain limited autonomy proved fruitful. On Behind the Boss, his management efficiency was praised. Sadia, having claimed to have worked with more charities than Foyez, was chosen as team manager. Her management was generally poor because she was unable to contact and locate team members at key points during the day. She put Foyez in charge of the online donation campaign, who used a wrong logo to represent the charity. Utopia's cake stall at the London Muslim Centre was unstaffed at some points, leading to people taking cakes without donating. Sadia did not give herself a fixed role, coming in and going back out of the office during the day. She did, however, reshuffle responsibilities in her team towards the end of the day, and on Behind the Boss, she was recognised for her "damage limitation" efforts. She also backed Foyez when he was challenged by Howard over the use of the incorrect logo.
- Result: Oasis raised £2209.53, and Utopia raised £1441.93
- Winner: Oasis - By £767.60
- Reward: Thames river cruise on board Canary Wharf Group's private boat
- Brought into the boardroom: Sadia, Afra and Atifa
- Eliminated: Atifa - For poor communication with Sadia throughout the day, and for failing to raise substantial funds.
- Warnings to contestants: After the announcement of the new teams at the end of Episode 2, Sanawar warned Oasis that 'because you are one less in number, you need to work twice as hard'. Sanawar raised concerns about Lamisha selectively approaching certain population constituencies for donations and ignoring others. After eliminating Atifa, Howard warned that he did not want to see Afra and Sadia on the losing team for the third consecutive week.
- Behind the Boss guests: Atifa Chowdhury (eliminated contestant), Tasmia Chowdhury (Atifa and Lamisha's cousin & Team Oasis volunteer), Abdul Hoque Habib (charity partner representative) and Sanawar Choudhury (assisting judge)
Week 4: Travel and Tours[edit]
- Air Date: 02 January 2016
- Team Cascade International: Nabila (Team Manager), Afra, Jawwad, Radh, and Tushar (in place of Foyez).
- Team Voyage: Azmaeen (Team Manager), Hussain, Lamisha, Prianto, and Sadia.
- Task: Put together a holiday package and pitch to tourism industry experts and potential customers. The team that is awarded most points by the audience for the pitch, and brings in most sales wins.
- Team managers' performance: Afra and Nabila both put themselves up for Cascade's team manager. Radh challenged Nabila on her failure as team manager for the first task, but ultimately, he voted for her, much to Afra's dismay. Jawwad was also prompt to back Nabila. Nabila was efficient during the preparation session; she quickly chose Egypt as her destination, and asked Radh to start making provisional itineraries. She was not too dominating, and she allowed Afra and Jawwad to make valuable contributions to the holiday package. On the day of the task, however, Nabila's leadership was poor. Kuhinoor said that it seemed like Radh was the team manager, and indeed, Nabila did rely on him to make important decisions. She also relied on Radh to integrate Tushar into the team on his first 3G Boss task. In addition, Nabila's pitch was poor, something she admitted in the boardroom, and it had to be rescued by Jawwad and Radh. Nonetheless, her decision to put Afra in charge of promotion was the right call; Afra made an attractive and informative promotional leaflet with the aid of a graphic designer. Prianto and Azmaeen put themselves up for Voyage's team manager. After a prolonged debate, Sadia intervened and called a vote, in which Azmaeen commanded the majority. He chose the destination of Tenerife, and set about delegating roles and preparing for the day of the task. Azmaeen's leadership was fraught with trouble. He had regular personality clashes with Sadia, whom he had sent with Lamisha to sell holiday packages in Gants Hill. It took several phone calls on Sadia's part for Azmaeen to allow them to return to the office. Azmaeen also chose Prianto to lead the pitch, which proved to be the wrong decision, but Prianto attributed his poor performance to Azmaeen's short-notice decision to change the holiday destination to Paris. Despite suggestions from other team members, Azmaeen refused to give Sadia a significant speaking role until minutes before the pitch. In the boardroom, he was accused of attempting to get his strongest competitors eliminated, and on Behind the Boss, he was unanimously voted the most backstabbing contestant. His bilingual skills, however, came in handy during the task as he was able to contact tour operators in France to confirm key details.
- Result: Cascade International booked £900 worth of packages, and Voyage booked £800 worth.
- Winner: Cascade International - By £100
- Reward: High tea at the Skygarden on 20 Fenchurch Street
- Brought into the boardroom: Azmaeen, Prianto and Sadia. Lamisha was later called back by Howard.
- Eliminated: Prianto - For a poor pitch (despite claiming to be an award-winning speaker).
- Warnings to contestants: Howard raised concerns about Sadia's record and warned that he wanted to see more from her next week. Sanawar said that Azmaeen had remained in the competition 'by the skin of his teeth'.
Week 5: Simplecall[edit]
- Air Date: 09 January 2016
- Team 1: Afra, Azmaeen, Lamisha, Nabila and Tushar.
- Team 2: Hussain, Jawwad, Radh and Sadia.
- Task: The teams are set to enter the telecommunications industry with lead sponsor Simplecall, but the specific task has not yet been announced.
