51Talk (NYSECOE) is a global online English learning platform headquartered in Singapore.[1] The company provides 1-on-1 live lessons and primarily serves children aged 3 to 15. It has also expanded to include adult English and Mandarin Chinese programs.[2]

History

51Talk was founded in 2011 by Jack Jiajia Huang. In 2016, the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: COE), becoming one of the first Asia-based online English-education providers to go public in the United States.[3][4]

51Talk's initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange in 2016.

In 2021, 51Talk began a business transformation to focus on global K–12 English education outside of mainland China. The company established its international headquarters in Singapore and expanded across Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.[5][6]

Business model

51Talk operates a digital platform that connects students with certified teachers for live, one-on-one English lessons. The model integrates standardized teaching frameworks, certified instructors, and proprietary classroom technology.[7]

Courses are aligned with international standards such as the CEFR, and teachers typically hold TESOL or TEFL certifications. The platform uses AI-based analytics for progress tracking and feedback.

Courses and curriculum

The company’s curriculum is designed for K-12 learners, following frameworks such as the CEFR and the CCSS. Modules cover speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, listening, and reading.[8] In addition to K–12 English courses, 51Talk also offers programs for adult English learners and international students studying Mandarin.

Teachers and training

51Talk's teacher network is primarily based in the Philippines.[9] The company requires instructors to hold or pursue credentials such as TESOL or TEFL.[10]

Technology

51Talk’s platform uses live one-on-one instruction with AI-assisted learning tools, integrating live video, interactive whiteboards, and progress tracking in a virtual classroom.[11] The system includes pre-class previews, in-class lessons, post-class reviews, and AI-guided practice.[12]

Markets and localization

51Talk operates across Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, in markets including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.

In 2025, 51Talk established a regional office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.[13] The company collaborated with Saudi educator Yasser Al-Huzaimi and ran outdoor advertising campaigns in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam.[14]

Reception

Media outlets in the Philippines have reported on the company's role in providing online teaching jobs.[9]

Controversies and regulation

In 2021, new education regulations in China (see Double Reduction Policy) prompted a restructuring across the online tutoring industry. 51Talk subsequently shifted its strategic focus to international markets, expanding operations outside of mainland China.[5]

Public engagement and youth initiatives

In 2024 and 2025, students supported by 51Talk delivered climate-themed speeches at the UN climate conferences (COP29 and COP30). Coverage included delegates from Thailand and Japan at COP29,[15][16] and participation reported for the UAE and Vietnam at COP30.[17][18]

Awards and recognition

  • In 2020, 51Talk received a Silver Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of the Philippines for its “Yellow Collar Initiative” campaign.[19]
