51Talk was founded in 2011 by Jack Jiajia Huang. In 2016, the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: COE), becoming one of the first Asia-based online English-education providers to go public in the United States.[3][4]
In 2021, 51Talk began a business transformation to focus on global K–12 English education outside of mainland China. The company established its international headquarters in Singapore and expanded across Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.[5][6]

In 2021, new education regulations in China (see Double Reduction Policy) prompted a restructuring across the online tutoring industry. 51Talk subsequently shifted its strategic focus to international markets, expanding operations outside of mainland China.[5]
Public engagement and youth initiatives
In 2024 and 2025, students supported by 51Talk delivered climate-themed speeches at the UN climate conferences (COP29 and COP30). Coverage included delegates from Thailand and Japan at COP29,[15][16] and participation reported for the UAE and Vietnam at COP30.[17][18]
