66°North is an Icelandic brand specializing in outdoor clothing. It was founded in 1926 by Hans Kristjánsson as the Fishermen's Clothing Factory of Iceland.[1]
History[edit]
Icelandic fisherman and marine engineer Hans Kristjánsson traveled to Norway in 1924 to study the production of fishing clothing. He and his family moved to Reykjavík two years later, where he founded the Fishermen's Clothing Factory of Iceland. Its first products were oilskin jackets to supply the growing Icelandic fishing industry. In 1928 the company began supply protective clothing to the Icelandic Search and Rescue Team. In the decades after the Second World War, its product line expanded to include a wider variety of work wear and outdoor clothing and to incorporate synthetic materials.
The company was rebranded as 66°North in 1977. In 2022 it became the first Icelandic company to receive B Corporation certification.[2][3]
Products[edit]
66°North manufactures about half of its products in its own facilities located in Latvia with the remainder sourced from third-party manufacturers in China, Portugal, Romania, and Sweden.[4] Some limited edition items are produced in Iceland.
Among the company's best-known products are its Workman knitted hat and Snæfell waterproof jacket.
