History[edit]
8a.nu is a global climbing site founded by Jens Larssen.[1] in 1999 [2]. It was initially launched as local sport climbing site for Gothenborg in Sweden but has since then grown to the largest database of Climbing Crags in the world. With the endeavour to develop a system that would allow to make climbing measurable, together with the site’s webmaster Leif Jägerbrand they invented the Scorecard including the world ranking. In 2000, Björn Pohl joined the team and with him the global site was launched, introducing the first world ranking in climbing.
From 2003 - 2016 the site’s webmaster has been Jonas Emanuelsson who has expanded development of the site for more than 20 countries. Today 8a.nu includes the world's largest crag database, on-line interaction and a training-log. Since late 2017, the company Vertical Life is maintaining the site.[3]
Scorecard[edit]
8a.nu aims to provide the climbing community with a system of updated world rankings. Within scorecards, registered users can log their ascents. By doing so, each climber can both create a personal record of his achievements as well as competing with tens of thousands of climbers across the globe.[4]
Over the years hundreds of thousands of climbs have been registered and are since then reported in global ranking for both routes and boulders. The rankings are available for men, women as well as junior climbers.[5] and are based on the Top-10 climbs of the past 12 months.[6]
8a.nu Scoring Table[edit]
The scorecard is based on a point system. The sum of ascent style and ascent difficulty of the best 10 climbs of the last 12 months determine the level of every individual climber.
