Route 902 is a bus route operating in Melbourne, Victoria that is operated by Kinetic Melbourne. The bus route is one of 3 orbital SmartBus routes on the Melbourne bus network. It runs between Chelsea and Airport West, connecting to nine railway stations and three tram routes spanning a total of 76 kilometres.[1]
History
In the late 2000s and early 2010s orbital routes began being introduced in Melbourne as an alternative form of public transport to trains which allowed people to get to major areas without needing to go via the city. In the early days of SmartBus, routes 888/889 were introduced operating on the currently used Chelsea to Nunawading. In April 2010, the green orbital route, 902, was introduced as a replacement of route 888/889, being extended to Airport West.[2] When routes 888/889 were both introduced, the route had SmartBus status which offers premium features which are only available on other SmartBus routes.[3] This status stayed when the route was converted to a full orbital route.
Since 31 January 2022, this route has been operated by bus operator Kinetic Melbourne.[4]
In March 2022 there have been proposals for launching new hybrid buses on 902 as well as 901 and 903.[5] 78 of these buses have been planned to enter service by 2025 and several of these are currently entering service [6]
