A-J Towse (born 19 August 2003) is a professional Rugby League player who plays in the wing position, for the York City Knights in the Betfred Championship.[1]

He formerly played for amateur Club Heworth ARLFC as both a Junior and in the Open Age, represented the North-East Universities 2021 and played in the Universities Origin game for the North in the same year.

He is studying for a degree in Computer Science at York St. John University.[2]

Playing career[edit]

Towse was born in York, North Yorkshire, UK and is a product of amateur club Heworth ARLFC,[3] having played Rugby League from the age of 11 and latterly the York City Knights Excel Program, having represented them at U16's.[4]

Having made his first Open-Age appearance in a pre-season friendly[5] for York Knights vs Featherstone Rovers at the age of 16, he signed a 3 year contract for the seasons 2021 to 2023.[6]

York City Knights 2021[edit]

Towse made his professional debut[7] in April 2021 in York's defeat by Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup 3rd Round.

Later that year he made a second appearance in the Knights' September win over London Broncos.[8]

Coventry Bears and Rochdale Hornets 2021 (on-loan)[edit]

During 2021 Towse made 2 loan appearances[9] in May 2021 for Coventry Bears, scoring 1 try, and one loan appearance in August for Rochdale Hornets.[10]

Leeds Rhinos Reserves 2022 (on-loan)[edit]

Towse made one appearance on loan for Leeds Rhinos Reserves vs Wigan, before being recalled to play for the Knights.[11]

York City Knights 2022[edit]

2022 proved to be a breakthrough year for Towse, appearing 18 times for the Knights and scoring 8 tries.[12]

He scored a brace in games against Newcastle Thunder,[13] Whitehaven RLFC[14] and London Broncos,[15] but it was his acrobatic try against Batley Bulldogs[16][17] live on Premier Sports that will be remembered most.

During the Rugby League World Cup, Towse also spent several days training with the New Zealand National team.[18]

York Knights 2023[edit]

2023 was a very successful season with Towse the only ever-present player completing all 34 League and Cup games, scoring 20 tries in the process and helping the side reach the play-offs for the second successive year.

Honours[edit]

In 2021 he represented the North East Universities and then the North in the Universities Origin game that year, scoring in all of the games.[20]

In 2022 he was nominated for the Rugby League Betfred Championship Young Player of the Year.[21][22]

He also won two Club awards for Young Player of the Year 2022 and Try of the Year, 2022.[23][24][25][26]

In 2023 Towse was awarded Student Sportsperson of the Year in the York Sport Awards.[27][28]

He was also awarded the Knights Supporters Society award for Player of the year.[29]

He also won two Club awards for Young Player of the Year 2023 and Top Try Scorer.[30]

Also in 2023 he was again nominated for Championship Young Player of the Year. [31]
