ABC TRANSPORT PLC

ABC Transport Plc (formerly Associated Bus Company) is a road transport and logistics company founded on February 13, 1993. It runs a modern passenger road transportation system in Nigeria and also the West Coast of Africa in line with internationally accepted standards, and is an off-shoot of Rapido Venture. ABC buses are branded with the company's trademark logo which is the Reindeer, known for its unique peculiarities which are strong, fast and moves in herds. These peculiarities are what the company’s symbol represents.

HISTORY 1983 – 2001: Early years

Mr. Frank Nneji is the chief executive officer and founder of ABC Transport. Nneji who is born on April 30, 1960 is married and has four children. During his time in secondary school, he came up with an idea on how to transport students who go to watch football matches as well as attend debate events. He had arrangements with big lorries’ drivers (Mammy Wagons, back in the days after civil war), they pick up these students for a fee at specified locations and on particular days. He would pay the drivers their fees and keep his own profit.

At university level, he contested for the position of Transport Director for University of Nigeria, Nsukka and won the election. In 1992, Nneji developed a business plan and approached some potential financiers for a loan to start up his business. After much rejection, Diamond Bank Plc agreed to fund his business under an operating lease agreement of 1.5 million Naira. He used the money to lease five Hiace buses and bought one, making them six buses.

In February 1993, ABC commenced operations in road passenger transportation with six buses, shuttling the Owerri-Lagos route. The buses were pioneered at the old Owerri terminal, Mbaise Road. August 1993, ABC added two more buses to its fleet size.

In 1994, two 55-seater Marcopolo buses were added to ABC transport fleet. For the first time in the history of luxury bus operation in Nigeria, onboard TV/Video entertainment was introduced to reduce travellers’ boredom and unease. This emergence birth Business Class Service, which features; courteous crew, reclining refreshment onboard and passenger insurance scheme. Before the end of 1994, the Business Class fleet had increased to six (6) and ABC Transport was becoming a household name.

1997 – 2010: Expansion and diversification

By early 1997, ABC Transport diversified into cargo/parcel service armed with an operation license from Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST). ABEX Parcel Services became a reality as it offers its services at lower rates than the existing courier companies.

By May 1997, ABC Transport rolled out Sleeper Service. This service offers a refined approach to night travel with the traveler getting to the destination terminal early the next day. By the end on 1997, the fleet size has soared to 20 and ABC Transport extended their operations to major cities of Port Harcourt and Jibowu, Lagos, Aba, Umuahia, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Executive Express Service, a new service was commissioned in 1998. This service herald fully air conditioned buses with toilet facility, comfortable reclining seats with enough legroom, onboard lunch, TV/Video entertainment and other perks. The Executive Express Service is a delight of the high profile travelers who would otherwise travel by air.

As road transport was getting better as a result of ABC Transport innovations, there was the need to reach out to travelers all over the world. In this regards, ABC Transport website was developed (www.abctransport.com). This was the first transport company in Nigeria to be on the internet, birthing E-ticketing commencement. At this time also, ABC Transport was already coordinating over forty schedules with more than thirty six buses in its fleet.

In 2000, ABC Transport set up a Driver Training Academy as well as accident-free award ceremony for its drivers, as a way to motivate them and keep them in check while driving.

During early 2000s, cargo delivery was introduced. Cargo Delivery Service is a service which was initially meant for passengers with excess luggage. These luggage were transported separately using truck. Currently, cargo service is not only meant for passengers but any customer who wants to transport items from one location to another across the country. Also, cash transfer service was introduced to help ABC customers who relied on the company to send small amount of money to family/relations as well as friends to destinations where ABC’s offices are located. This cash transfer service was a personal message service for ABC customers.

In 2001, ABC built its first ultra-modern bus terminal, the first of its kind in West Africa in Abuja. In 2002, more of this terminal was built in the eastern heartland of Owerri and subsequently in Lagos metropolis.

2003 – Present:

In March 2003, Capital Alliance Private Equity (CAPE) acquired 30% shares of ABC Transport. With the acquisition, Capital Alliance (Nigeria) became stakeholders in ABC Transport, a partnership that re-positioned the company for greater performance.

By July 15, 2004, Coach West Africa operations began, barely ten years into the existence of ABC Transport as a company. Coach West Africa heralded a new dawn not only in road transport but the entire socio-economic fabric of Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana collectively.

The company went through a successful initial public offer in September, 2006, thereby converting the company to a public limited liability company, with over 22,000 stakeholders.

In 2007, ABC Transport introduced shuttle service which is a service segment that provides shorter distance using mini buses.

In 2008, ABC Transport Plc introduced Sprinter Service for light travellers. This in same year, ABC Transport Plc kicked off Haulage service.

By 2014, ‘SHACMAN TRUCKS’ rolled off. This involved the Assembly Plant at Transit Supports Services (TSS), and ABC Transport Plc subsidiary. Fifty trucks were assembled weekly and by 2017, a thousand trucks had been assembled.

SERVICES

ABC Transport Plc services specifically are designed for travellers. Its focus is on safety and comfort. Apart from the parcel service, all other of ABC Transport Plc services have one thing in common which is scheduled departures.

ABC Executive Express

This service is a fully air-conditioned, almost non-stop bus service with deluxe interior, cold bar, conference facility for added convenience, toilet facility, and a lot more. It features the most modern coach service available in the West African sub-region.

Sprinter Services

This is a service that is designed for passengers who travel light with little or no luggage. This service is fully air-conditioned and carries 14 passengers only. It is also available from all ABC Transport terminals across the nation.

Shuttle Services

Shuttle Service is a service that allows its passengers travel in air-conditioned buses that run short routes. These routes include Aba, Awka, Calabar, Enugu, Onitsha, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Umuahia, Uyo and Warri. The buses have speed limit control and tracking mechanism.

ABC Coach West Africa

ABC coach West Africa service transformed road travel on the West Coast of Africa and has made West African countries closer to Nigeria with its new state-of-the-art fleets. ABC Coach West Africa features one of the most modern coach service available in West Africa sub-region. This service is suitable for business, travel and tourism.

ABC Cargo Express (Consolidated Cargo Delivery)

This is a delivery service that offers both travellers and non-travellers the opportunity to convey items of various sizes, shapes and weight to their choice destinations. ABC Transport carries out delivery services nationwide with over 20 trucks in their fleet. Items are consolidated and trucked on the basis of destinations. Its daily key destinations are Aba, Abuja, Calabar, Kaduna, Lagos, Lokoja, Onitsha, Owerri and Port Harcourt. Its fleets of trucks are in sizes of 3.5tons, 10tons and 22tons and are available for hire. It has customer service oriented support and is maintained by best hands in the transportation industry. ABC Cargo Express also offers line support for courier/logistics companies on next day priority basis. This service also has 24hours parcel delivery services.

City Transit Inn (CTI)

City Transit Inn (CTI), is a budget 114 luxurious and furnished rooms next to ABC Transports’ modern terminal at Utako, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which offers affordable air-conditioned accommodation with hot and cold showers, TV with multiple channels, VIP Lounge, 24 Hours Room Service and Laundry Services, etc. The hotel has indoor cocktail and banquet hall with seating capacity of 50 seats. Power supply is very efficient as there are two stand-by generators to complement power supply.

ABC Haulage

ABC Transport haulage service is a service that involves contracting haulage services with manufacturing companies with the aim of conveying their goods to their depots/warehouses across the federation. ABC haulage customers include top manufacturing companies in Nigeria: Nestle Nigeria Plc, Reckitt Benkizer, Beta Glass Factory, UNICEM Plc, GZ Industries, LAFARGE WARPCO Nigeria, among others.

OTHER BRANDS AND PARTNERSHIPS

Transit Support Services Limited (TSSL)

This service deals with importation and sales of auto spare parts and automobile. This service also involves support services like fabrication of car parts, provision of fiber glass materials and also, local manufacturing of small components for road transport industry. It is a major distributor of Autokontrol speed limiters, Yaxing buses and Shacman trucks. It is currently assembling Forland trucks and BAW Pilot mini buses at its assembly plant in Enugu.

City Transit Inn (CTI)

City Transit Inn is located in the heart of Utako District, Abuja and situated close to Federal Ministries and other business centers.

ABC Express Courier Ltd. (ABEX)

ABC Express Courier, otherwise known as ABEX Express Parcel Services, was incorporated in Nigeria in 1997 and licensed by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). ABEX specializes in the delivery of documents/parcels nationwide, with a network spanning across Nigeria.

ABC Ghana Ltd
