The AFC Nations League is a proposed biennial international football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the member associations of AFC, the sport's Asian governing body.

Proposal[edit]

Following the development of the UEFA Nations League and CONCACAF Nations League which severely limited the chances for AFC teams to play friendlies, the AFC President Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa and other AFC members have sought to create its own Nations League in 2018. The concept of the proposed AFC Nations League would include all 47 members of the AFC and divided into a series of group where they would be promoted/relegated depend on their performance. The proposed tournament would take place on dates on the FIFA International Match Calendar that were previously allocated for international friendlies and would not affect the FIFA World Cup or AFC Asian Cup.[1] It is possible that the competition might be hosted in 2021, though it remains obscure.[2]

Format[edit]

Since it is still in proposal, a formal format has yet to be announced. However, the AFC would model after the UEFA's Nations League, including group series, promotion and relegation. In the top league, the winners of the four groups go on to play in the Nations League Finals, with two semi finals, one third and fourth place decider, and one final to decide which team becomes the AFC Nations League champion.[3]
