Artificial General Intelligence Society (AGI Society) is a United States nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the study and development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Unlike conventional artificial intelligence organizations that focus on domain-specific, narrow applications, the AGI Society focuses on the long-term goal of engineering systems with human-level cognitive capabilities and beyond.[1][2]
Its primary activities include serving as the organizational body behind the Conference on Artificial General Intelligence and publishing the Journal of Artificial General Intelligence (JAGI).[3]
History and Organization
The research community associated with the Society developed around a series of meetings devoted specifically to artificial general intelligence, beginning with the first Conference on Artificial General Intelligence at the University of Memphis in March 2008.[4] The conference was organized by Ben Goertzel, Pei Wang and Stan Franklin.
The formal organization was established to serve as an institutional guardian for the pursuit of general machine intelligence, operating independently of corporate AI commercialization.[1] Registered as a nonprofit in the U.S. state of Delaware, the Society formed its initial board of directors in September 2011.[3] Funding for the society's activities and the conference series relies partially on decentralized support, including digital asset donations from the independent developer community.[5]
As of 2026, the Society is chaired by SingularityNET CEO Ben Goertzel, with Pei Wang serving as vice chair, Joscha Bach as secretary, and Matt Iklé as treasurer. Its board of directors comprises researchers from across the AGI spectrum, including Itamar Arel, Marcus Hutter, Moshe Looks, and Kristinn R. Thórisson.[3]
Conference on Artificial General Intelligence
The Society organizes the Conference on Artificial General Intelligence, a continuing research conference series indexed by DBLP.[6] The conference serves as the primary gathering for researchers working on cognitive architectures, reasoning, machine consciousness, and the evaluation of general intelligence.
The conference receives independent coverage for its focus on long-term AI trajectories. The 2024 conference at the University of Washington was highlighted by GeekWire for its debates on machine consciousness.[7] The nineteenth conference (AGI-26) was held in San Francisco from 27 to 30 July 2026, with refereed proceedings published by Springer Nature as part of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series.[8] A 2025 review in AI & Society noted the conference series' historical importance in renewing the distinction between general intelligence and narrow AI paradigms.[9]
Journal of Artificial General Intelligence
The Journal of Artificial General Intelligence is a peer-reviewed open-access journal devoted to research on AGI. Owned by the AGI Society, the journal began publication in December 2009 (ISSN 1946-0163) and is edited by Pei Wang of Temple University.[10][11]
